L'Avenida Hotel, Mallorca

Travel

by Jeroen Bergmans

Over the last five years Mallorca has enjoyed an explosion of plush, boutique properties designed with the well-heeled sun-worshipper in mind. The latest to grace its stunning coastline is the eight-bedroom L'Avenida in the picturesque town of Soller on the west coast.

Like its competitors, L'Avenida sports sumptuous bathrooms with Philippe Starck faucets and an in-house bistro serving seasonal, modern Mediterranean fare. But unlike the other design hotels on the island, l'Avenida plays on its unique architectural heritage.

It was built in 1903 by acclaimed Modernist architect Joan Rubio i Bellver, a pupil and contemporary of Gaudi. Current owner Paul Slijper has restored the original, flamboyant plasterwork and frescoed ceilings and added Cole & Sons wallpaper to bring the overall look bang on trend.
