The luxury Spanish hotel group Hospes has recently opened a new hotel in the Catalan town of Puigcerda that raises the bar for five star accommodation previously set by its other six Spanish properties. The former family mansion, Villa Paulita, is a beautiful Art Nouveau building overlooking Lake Puigcerda, framed by the Pyrenees and within easy distance of both Toulouse and Barcelona as well as all the cultural and sporting activities of the surrounding landscape.
Each of the 38 rooms has been individually decorated with a rustic but modern feel, with clean, whitewashed walls, natural wooden beams and exposed brick forming the central backdrop throughout the majority. Throughout, in both private and communal spaces, the hotel has been designed and decorated with reference to the building’s former incarnation as a family home, which lends a very attractive character overall where so many five star hotels miss the fine balance between luxury and corporate.
L’Estany, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant offers the finest Senzone cuisine, carefully put together using as much local produce wherever possible, while the ‘Bodyna Spa’ offers a comprehensive range of natural treatments. Further afield the area is littered with fine examples of Gothic, Romanesque and Modernist architecture, as well as a vast number of more energetic activities such as skiing, golf, trekking, cycling and even ice-skating.
