In designing a space that would be devoted primarily to the consumption of caviar, Helsinki-based designer Joanna Laajisto was careful to avoid clichés of outré parties, fur coats and blinding bling. Instead, entirely in keeping with the Finlandia’s location by Helsinki’s homey and rustic waterfront market, she has opted for a low-key palette of warm neutral colours such as muted greys and cream, and picked furnishings by either Finnish brands or local craftsmen. Natural wood and simple geometric patterns are especially effective in evoking a Finnish winter landscape. All the better to savour the restaurant’s heady stock of White Sturgeon, Russian Oscietra, and Beluga Kaluga.
