We like to travel far, especially when the destination is our sort of paradise. So when we heard about the launch of Hangaroa Eco Village on Easter Island, we had to make the trip. Nestled on the southwestern tip of this remote Polynesian island, near the airport and the capital, Hanga Roa, the resort takes its cues from the ceremonial stone village of Orongo, the ruins of which you can still spot around the Rano Kau volcano.
The lobby recalls ancient Rapa Nui boathouses and is connected to an outdoor museum displaying ruins and archeological treasures. The 75 cave-like rooms, in materials such as cypress logs, clay and volcanic rock, are furnished in contemporary style and equipped with wireless Internet, clay baths and private terraces overlooking the Pacific. A round dining room - featuring large exposed cypress trunks and rustic pine-twig ceilings - has exceptional ocean views, while the spa boasts an outdoor Kneipp pool and two outdoor Jacuzzis.
