The Principal — Madrid, Spain
The third property from Spanish hotelier Pau Guardens ticks all the boxes you’d expect from a modern abode in the Spanish capital. Occupying a 1917 corner building on Madrid’s Gran Via, The Principal is home to 76 rooms and suites, all framed by the high ceilings, iron railings and large windows typical of this part of town. In contrast to the building’s exterior — a surreptitious blend of art nouveau and art deco details — the interiors, by designer Pilar Garcia-Nieto and Barcelona firm Luzio, are a chic medley of cool grey tones, accented with luxe materials and statement furniture like BKF’s butterfly chair. It’s all topped off by a rooftop terrace and bar, though those seeking refuge from the din of the city may retreat to the wellness suite, with its fully equipped gym and sauna.
