De Bakkerswinkel — Rotterdam, Netherlands
The creative dialogue between Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek and restaurateur Piet Hekker is 18 years in the making, resulting in no less than nine Bakkerswinkel lunch rooms and cafés across the Netherlands, each reflecting its individual location, edifice and personality. For the opening of its tenth location in Rotterdam, going bigger, better and even more striking was the only way to go, elevating the well-liked concept to feel more ‘like a restaurant instead,’ reflects Hein Eek. Accordingly, a large copper bar takes centre stage, with foldable lighting fixtures, a two-toned cupboard with interlocking shelves and a stunning Tree Trunk Table furnishing the rough-luxe venue. On the menu – as always – are the fresh, high-quality organic cakes, pies, sandwiches, scones and quiches that we’ve come to love from this Dutch favourite.
