The Standard — Copenhagen, Denmark
Famed Danish jazz musician Niels Lan Doky and Noma co-owner Claus Meyer have teamed up to transform a former ferry building into an entertainment venue that mirrors the golden age of jazz standards by George Gershwin and Cole Porter. The Standard's Art Deco headquarters were designed by Kristoffer Nyrop Varming in 1937 and now features an Art Deco-inspired logo created by the architect's great-grandson Søren Varming of Punktum Design. The two-storey building has been divided into four different venues; the first, Almanak, was decorated by Christina Meyer Bengtsson and industrial designer Ulrik Nordentoft and offers modern takes on Danish classics like smørrebrød. Verandah, a ground-floor restaurant, serves up contemporary Indian dishes in a dining room designed by Italian studio GamFratesi. There's also a top-floor restaurant Studio, which offers an ambitious exploration of Nordic cuisine, led by chef Torsten Vildgaard. The upper floor is also where intimate jazz performances can be enjoyed twice a week.
