The florescent lights and garish decorative touches ubiquitous in many Hong Kong establishments are starting to become a thing of the past. Pak Loh Chiu Chow is a perfect example of the growing trend for Chinese restaurants that place as much importance on décor as food. Designed by local architect Nelson Chow, the elegant, unfussy interiors are a perfectly choreographed blend of vintage 1960s Hong Kong with a contemporary flair. A dramatic vaulted walnut-ribbed ceiling tops a series of distinctive dining alcoves; earthy tones, graphic wallpaper by Belgian textile house Maharam and burgundy-leather banquettes add to the retro ambience. The setting aims to attract a younger creative crowd, but the menu has something for everyone with seasonal classics like chiu chow cold crab, abalone and jin jew chicken.
