There is something of a battle going on in HDTV/DVD land – one not unlike the VHS/Betamax wars of the early 1980s. Blu-ray is battling HD-DVD for the disc market, while 720p resolution is taking on 1080i for TVs. In a sense, none of this matters. Whoever wins, broadly speaking, you’ll end up getting a better picture and sound. The problem is, of course, if you back the wrong horse now, you’ll have to replace the whole lot in two years’ time. Philips, which was badly burned when its Video 2000 system came a poor third to Betamax, has learned its lesson this time and has produced the DVP 9000s. Essentially, it’s compatible with everything, so you can buy in peace.
