If, like us, you spend an inordinate amount of time globe-trotting, you'll know a raft of magazines and a few good books doesn't really wile away the hours. And it goes without saying that in-flight entertainment isn't exactly up to our standards either. We were briefly excited when portable DVD players arrived on the market, but soon found postage stamp-sized screens and clunky models did little to alleviate our boredom.
But finally a model that neither strains nor offends our eyes is available for the first time in the UK. The Amadana Portable DVD player boasts the largest LCD screen on the market at 10 inches, a flat-touch, easy button operation, six input-output terminals, Dolby Digital Sound and an SD memory card slot; all pretty impressive, meaning easy-to-use cinema (or at least flatscreen television) quality on our laps.
This is only half the story though. What we really like is the laminated bamboo lid panel, a feat of technological design, given the difficulty of maintaining precision and regularity when combining natural materials and industrial gadgetry. The natural texture, achieved by carbonising the bamboo before it is laminated, means each unit has a very bespoke quality and a refined elegance, unusual in the world of technology where sleek and chic are the dominant looks.
