Milan Autumn/Winter '08
Giorgio Armani
The real stars of the Giorgio Armani show were not those seated in the front row, but the evening dresses that closed the show. One gets the sense that although Armani is known for his tailoring, his passion seems to be in elaborate evening looks. The collection was called 'Wanderlust'. The adornment and décor came from as far afield as Japan, Mongolia, Tibet and Afghanistan, ending up with what Armani called 'fantasie floreale gipsy' (gipsy floral fantasy), with layering of fine silky fabrics, some in lace, some beaded, some printed over one another. Fringing swung off shawls, long coats were cut in uneven layers of shaggy wool and Mongolian lamb, and skirts came made of strips of floral printed-silk coated in a celluloid film which gave more of a shine than chintz. It was about as far from understated greige as you can get.
