The porteños, as the people of the River Plate port are known, have taken some knocks over the years. The $100bn debt left by the economic meltdown of 2001 is proving slow to dissipate and crime is on the up, but in spite of everything, optimism prevails. Boasting capacious parks, broad boulevards, a rich arts scene and burgeoning food, wine and fashion industries, Buenos Aires has everything a city needs to shine.
