Hot on the heels of successful launches in Seattle, Detroit, Amsterdam and an original Berlin venture, boutique vodka brand Our/Vodka has collaborated with London-based entrepreneurs Clive Watson and Neil Chivers to launch Our/London, the company’s inaugural UK venture and first dedicated vodka distillery in the city’s East End.
Founded by Stockholm-based entrepreneur Åsa Caap and members of Swedish design firm Great Works, the company aims to be the first global brand with local roots – albeit one backed by drinks company Pernod Ricard. While the spirit’s recipe and branding remains consistent across each city, variations in local ingredients and distillation processes bring out characteristics unique to each distillery, highlighting subtle differences and a regional terroir for each location.
Watson, a successful restaurateur who counts modern London classics like Blixen and the Riding House Café to his name, adds: 'each micro distillery in each city is run by local partners who provide their unique personality and approach to running their businesses and marketing their product, which adds further distinction.'
The distillery – based in a converted railway arch in the city’s edgy Hackney neighbourhood – was set up between Watson and Chivers, a music PR director who looks after acts like the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. The pair were introduced by a mutual friend to the Our/Vodka team and hit it off immediately, 'they later joked that it was ‘love at first sight’,' Watson tells Wallpaper*.
The team’s copper remains as a crucial part of the final product. Designed specifically for Our/Vodka, here it was created for the dimensions of an urban environment, with a high efficiency to offset its small capacity. Despite the notoriously cramped confines of working in such a central location, the pair have managed to fashion an events and tasting space in their headquarters that promises to be a compelling addition to an already dynamic neighbourhood.
