Trend revivals are deeply pleasing in any medium of design. The transcendental moment when a product goes from looking dated to being refreshingly relevant and beautiful all over again, is testament to the enduring nature of good design. Currently, Modernism is having another moment in the world of furniture.
We particularly love the work of Kay+Stemmer, whose Modernist designs are enough to inspire an entire 1950s makeover based around a single curved console table. So it's good timing that eclectic New York showroom Sebastian+Barquet is holding an exhibition of the vintage furniture of Vladimir Kagan, a pioneer in the field of mid-century Modernism.
Not only has Kagan's work become iconic in its own right, but his designs have inspired and influenced generations of product designers since: curved wood, organic shapes, modular forms are all hallmarks of his unique style. His work has a timeless sensuality, a factor no doubt appreciated by ardent collectors of his vintage range including notables from Donna Karen to Frank Sinatra, Andy Warhol to Tom Ford (who wrote a forward to his autobiography, 'The Complete Kagan', in 2004).
Sebastian+Barquet will show 17 original works from Kagan, the first in a series of eight exhibitions, showcasing works by individual designers who have left an indelible mark on the design landscape.
