Video: Design Miami/Basel, Designers of the Future
Interiors
It may only be in its second year but the Designers of the Future exhibition at Design Miami/Basel - a show curated by the founder and chief curator, Ambra Medda - has swiftly become one of the highlights of the four-day fair.
The concept is relatively simple. Medda picks four protegées - whom this year were Peter Marigold, Nacho Carbonell, Tomas Gabzdil Libertiny and design duo, Raw Edges – and commissions them to produce a ‘viewer encompassing environment to stimulate discourse, reflection and community’ using the age old materials of mirror and plaster for an undisclosed sum of money.
Needless to say the four designers stepped up to the challenge, each with intriguing results. A gaping plaster-lined 'Fertility Cave' was shown by Carbonell; an oversized plaster egg by Libertiny; a traditional twist on the English parlour with plaster taxidermy from Marigold; and an angular plaster mountain from Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay at Raw Edges.
In the second of our commissions to come from our quest for film talent, Switzerland-based Philippe Calame and Maria Nicollier of Recproduction travel to Design Miami/Basel, to see the show, meet the designers and find out just what goes on in that fertility cave.
