For years now, Kuala Lumpur has had to contend with a haphazard collection of furniture specialists. Good quality, contemporary pieces have been difficult to find.
All of which explains the frisson that swept through town when Sydney-based SPACE recently opened their light-filled flagship gallery in the heart of Bangsar.

Designed by architects Voon Wong and Benson Saw, with interiors by Design Stream, the 500 m2, ochre-toned two-storey building is a treasure trove of contemporary, European-designed sofas, beds and home accessories.
The furniture, by the likes of B&B Italia, Cassina and Poliform, is smartly arranged in generously proportioned rooms to create set pieces - these give vacillating customers a realistic sense of how it will all look when unwrapped in their pied-a-terre.
What's more, though one finds usual suspects like Arne Jacobsen chairs or lamps by Moooi and Ingo Maurer, there are intriguing highlights that are, for the moment, available only in Kuala Lumpur; these include Patricia Urquiola's much-applauded Fat-Sofa and Naoto Fukasawa's Bunch ceramic flower vases.
Now there's even more reason to drop by one of Wallpaper's favourite retail cities, even if it's just to lounge around.
