Though reissuing old models of furniture has been gathering pace for some years now, against the backdrop of not very many new launches, it seemed more evident than ever at Cologne this year.
Classicon devoted their entire stand of the Brazilian designer, Sergio Rodriguez’s work but quieter reissues crept in round nearly every corner; from Verner Panton’s 1952 rug designs to Peter Ghyczy’s 1968 Egg chair; from a stunning range of Hans Wegner pieces to Peter Raacke’s industrial letter tray from 1965.
Whether it can be described as a burgeoning trend, fuelled by nostalgic yearning for the furniture of our forbears, or simply a happy accident of timing, it’s probably a bit early to say. But, as absence makes the heart grow fonder, each reissue feels almost better second time round.
