Inspired by the aperitivo ritual, the winners of the first ever design awards from Italian icons Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Alessi are set to be toasted across the UK

The first design awards from birra makers Peroni Nastro Azzurro in collaboration with Alessi, launched earlier this year, offered designers an exciting brief – to create pieces embodying all the style and qualities of these two major contributors to Italian culture, taking inspiration from the authentic Italian ritual of aperitivo.

Following their launch by online magazine Designboom, the Peroni Blue Ribbon Design Awards received a wealth of international entries. Favourites were chosen by judges including Alberto Alessi, head of design management; Alessi research consultant Alberto Gozzi; Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s supply chain director Martin Harlow; designer Stefano Giovannoni; Ekow Eshun of London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA); Birgit Lohmann, editor-in-chief of Designboom; and Wallpaper’s lifestyle director, Emma Moore. A selection of shortlisted designs has already shown at the ICA – including the two overall winners, ‘Aperitivo On the Go’ and ‘Olive Tree’ – and is about to go on tour.

Jamie Stone and his team from NewEdge + The Brewery, London, impressed with ‘Aperitivo On the Go’, a portable aperitivo kit with room for beers and light snacks that can make the occasion mobile. It was conceived to fit on the back of a Vespa. ‘Alessi stands for great craftsmanship; Peroni Nastro Azzurro for quality. ‘Aperitivo On the Go’ was inspired by both,’ says Stone.

Jonathan Krawczuk and Caroline Sipos, who met when studying at Central Saint Martins in London, say their shared love of Italy inspired their ‘Olive Tree’ design. The stainless steel ‘tree’ has picks for branches, which spear olives, forming an innovative tabletop sculpture.

For a special award, Wallpaper* chose ‘Airy Cocktail’ by ceramicist Nilly Landao, from Tel Aviv. A design that embracesthe essence of aperitivo, ‘Airy Cocktail’, comprises a rod and hooks, with snacks suspended in ceramic dishes at different levels, offering the kind of stylish food presentation that might grace a Wallpaper* special event.

The winners’ designs will be shown at exhibition spaces Urbis in Manchester, Dovecot in Edinburgh and The Mailbox in Birmingham, as well as at leading UK bars throughout October and November.
