When we charged Naoto Fukasawa with the task of interviewing Dieter Rams for the latter's guest-edition of Wallpaper*, we couldn't let Mr. Fukasawa go without asking him a few questions too. We were keen to find out about the day-to-day working life of the Japanese designer: how he works, where he works, what he sits on when he works and what he likes to do when he stops working...

What was the first thing you thought about when you woke up this morning?
My schedule of the day and what to wear.

What do you wear to work?
Usually casual shirt and pants.

What do you have for breakfast?
Usually traditional Japanese breakfast.

Do you read a newspaper/watch television/click online?
I leave the news on TV running every morning..

How do you get to work?
By my car.

What time do you first check your inbox?
7:30AM.

Where are your desk and chair from?
Italian + German furniture.

If you could save only one item from your office/studio what would it be?
My laptop?

Do you listen to music whilst you work? If so, what are you listening to at the moment?
No.

Where would your ideal lunch be and who would it be with?
Japanese noodles (Soba noodles) by myself.

Summarise in three words your work ethos?
Complete, inevitable, normal.

What do you think is the most overrated virtue?
Modern, posh and minimal stylised interiors.

Where do you feel most inspired?
While I am driving.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Working in product design.

How do you switch off?
By going to my little hut in the mountains.

What did you want to be when you were a child?
Chief.

What excites you/terrifies you on a daily basis?
When I find ideas for what I want to make.

Would you like to be your own assistant?
I guess I am. I do try to do things by myself.

Is there anything about retirement you look forward to?
To take care of everyday things properly each day.
