It's only been three years since Peter Marigold made a seamless transition from sculpture to product design. Having graduated in Fine Art and Sculpture from Central St Martins in 1997, it's little surprise to find an instinctively creative, conceptual quality to his work. His output since enrolling in the Royal College of Art Design MA in 2004 (from which he graduated just last year) has been prolific, to say the least. He's currently experimenting with a 3-D take on the Cubist ethos: 'The principle is that by splitting a form into angled pieces and then inverting them, a total of 360 degrees is achieved. There's something profound about turning an object inside out and discovering a new object inside and I've used this as the basis for a series of new storage pieces.' Marigold's collection will be shown at the Paul Smith Showroom as one of the Great Brits, a show jointly organised by the Design Museum and the British Council titled 'Ingenious Therapies'.
What are you currently working on?
Well, I'm currently working on a number of new pieces for the show, most of which are based on storage. I'm interested in how different people deal with the personal rubble and shrapnel of their lives, how different people are able to detach themselves from physical possessions and how different people become hoarders, or more politely 'collectors'. Besides my Box and Split shelving (on the 360 degree principle) for 'Ingenious Therapies', I'm also showing Make/Shift shelving for Movisi. They are a wedge-shaped shelving system, made from transparent, coloured Perspex that fits into window frames so the light filters through.
How many years have you been attending the Salone?
I've attended for the past three years and have shown on each occasion; once in the Internos gallery with Platform Ten and also with the British Council and with a large RCA group show - Made by Machine - at the Zeus furniture showroom. It's been amazing each time.
What are you most looking forward to about being in Milan this year for the Salone?
The cocktails at the Established & Sons party.
What are you dreading, if anything, about this year's fair?
Getting thrown out of the Established & Sons party by 'enthusiastic' Italian bouncers.
