Interiors

For anyone with a serious interest in magazines, Magma in London’s Covent Garden is something of a Mecca. Not so much a magazine shop but more a thriving micro-industry of printed matter, Magma is somewhere where a quick visit undoubtedly turns into a whole afternoon, ending-up with a mortgage-sized purchase of magazines from around the globe.

So imagine our glee when we caught wind of a Magma concept store, opening further down the same street and selling all manner of design objects. If the same attention is paid to global sourcing and idea sharing of design products as it is to magazines in the original store then a winning formula has been struck upon.

But perhaps even more exciting than the content is the shop design itself. What better building material to continue the Magma dynasty than paper… well cardboard. Under careful direction of Blustin Heath and Inside Out, the entire shop shelving systems, counter surfaces and even changing rooms are being made from treated cardboard. Laborious but environmentally friendly not to mention incredibly sightly, the shop interior arrived flat-packed, to be unfolded and fitted together in situ. The shelves around the shop walls are backlit, creating a luminescent honeycomb effect, whilst at the back of the store, layer after layer of hand-cut cardboard has been built into an intricate stock room.
