The kitchen tends to get somewhat neglected in the hierarchy of home design, more often an exercise in formulaic function than cutting edge innovation. We were excited, therefore, to learn about a new collaboration between Alfredo Häberli (who we spoke to in January about his ongoing work with Iittala) and Italian kitchen maker Schiffini. The two have partnered to create a new concept kitchen which will be featured in the next Eurocucina kitchen fair in Milan.

The design is about context – an idea of the kitchen as 'soul of the house' – and for Häberli that's a very personal vision. He describes his childhood in Argentina as one where the large, central kitchen was a focal point of family life, as much a workshop and living room as a place for preparing food. His kitchen for Schiffini is similarly practical and family-oriented. The focus is on character and neat, attractive functionality rather than aseptic, sterile aesthetics – a true hub for the modern family home, and a good looking room to boot.

In addition to Schiffini and Iittla, Häberli is currently also developing products for Camper, Classicon, Kvadrat, Moroso, Offecct, Ruckstuhl, Vitra, Volvo and Wogg. An exhibition of his work is planned for June 2008 at the Zurich Museum of Design.
