What we choose to collect tells a story of who we are. The objects and art with which we surround ourselves are personal statements of taste, philosophy, intellect and aesthetics. 'Adventures with Objects' – a new exhibition showcasing a diverse group of design objects amassed over more than 40 years by collector and design historian Alexander von Vegesack, is one such story.

The 300-plus pieces – including furniture, catalogues and architectural models by Prouvé, Eames, Aalto, Le Corbusier, Pesce and Yoshioka – are compelling in themselves. As a group they track the course of 20th and 21st century design from von Vegesack's unique perspective, and in so doing map the development of his aesthetic from that of a curious 15-year-old hunting for art at a Cairo bazaar to his current role as director of Germany's Vitra Design Museum.
Looking at the pieces, which range from the immediately recognisable to the esoteric and obscure, feels personal, a bit like stepping into a stranger's house and having a snoop around. Given the calibre of work on display here, we're happy von Vegesack chose to open his doors.
