'Mathematically organic, colourful paper explosions' is how Jen Stark describes her work. Plants and outer space are the inspiration for the mesmeric blasts; 'Coriolis Effect' for example, is a paper rendering of the natural force behind the rotation of cyclones.
But despite her cosmological references, Stark’s paper work started humbly: 'I decided to study art in Aix-en-Provence. I started doing the paper sculptures there because I didn't bring any art supplies with me, and typical materials were expensive. The paper was cheap and I just started experimenting with what it could do. This evolved into the kind of complex paper structures that I'm doing now.'
But it was as a child that her passion for art took root, painting watercolours with her grandfather, mostly of sailboats and birds – but sometimes of her Cabbage Patch Kid collection.
A prolific exhibitor, the Miami-based artist most recently held her own solo show 'Little By Little' in Chicago, and it’s an axiom that befits her artistic career well; a step at a time, she’s graduated from Cabbage Patch to cosmos.
