Dayanita Singh
Even when in motion, the subjects of Dayanita Singh's photographs have an almost painterly stillness about them. It could be that Singh, a photographer of almost ethereal talent, allows for this by letting her subjects simply be (many of her photographs are completely untouched). Whether it's the sad eunuch Mona Ahmed, or aged society ladies of Calcutta, with their wizened faces, there is the sense we're being made privy to a life, not a just a fleeting moment.
'Dayanita Singh', a special edition that encompasses some of her best bodies of work, is an excellent primer on the photographer, widely considered to be among the best in India. Though Singh shoots primarily in black and white, two of her colour series are included as well: 'Blue Book', a collection of eerie unpopulated urban scapes, and 'Dream Villa', another on nocturnal settings, seen here
