The first serious design hotel in a city dominated by uninspired chain brands, Square Nine is furnished with a collection of vintage Danish modern pieces. It took three years to amass, with New York antiques dealer Wyeth Home Furniture trawling international auctions and tracking down the manufacturers of a single 1930s Arne Vodder bar stool, then convincing the company to reproduce 12 more for the bar.

Verandah serves global cuisine 24/7. For drinks, head to the Ruby Lounge, the Sicca Bar or the Carbon bar.

The Park Hotels' latest property was designed by London's Conran & Partners and New York's Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The Park Hyderabad is the result of a riotous infusion of influences, from classical Indian architecture to high-end, big-style 1960s kitsch. Perched on the edge of the Hussain Sagar, the hotel comes with shimmering walls and striking interiors inspired by the city's jewellery and gem-cutting traditions.

With very little fanfare, the Fullerton Bay Hotel has staked out some of the finest views along Singapore's Marina Bay waterfront. The soaring foyer is a perfectly conserved raftered space that was the original arrival dock for the island's early settlers. This leads to a light-filled, six-storey, glass-encased wing. Conceived by the Hong Kong-based designer Andre Fu in a palette of marble, timber, rosewood and the merest hint of Chinoiserie, it houses the reception lobby and 100 rooms, each of which boasts marvellous views of the water.
