Catalina Fernandez pastry boutique, Mexico
A minimal black and white mock-warehouse interior is the unexpected new décor for an otherwise traditional pastry boutique Catalina Fernandez, in San Pedro, Mexico. Established in 1988, the shop blossomed out of a home bakery and its twenty-five year old interior has just undergone a remarkable revamp thanks to Mexican branding intelligence group Anagrama. Propped with containers emblazoned with the baker's indispensables; sugar, yeast and flour, the feeling of the space is that of an old industrial store room that has been white-washed from head to toe, the concrete floor preserved. The redesign has extended to the boxes the pastries are packed in, and the new sans serif logo. It's a perfect example of how an artisanal business can be given a new lease of life by smart design.
