Nilufar, Milan
Nina Yashar is considered a global expert and design maverick, courtesy of the principles that lie behind her brainchild Nilufar, on Milan's Via della Spiga. Founded in 1979 the gallery has until relatively recently specialised in historic Italian design, combined with eastern carpets and furniture.
But a series of unexpected and surprising exhibitions of late have catapulted Nilufar to the fore of performance design, notably in Basel this year with Martino Gamper's ingenious 'If Gio Only Knew'. The contemporary designer deconstructed a series of Gio Ponti-designed furnishings from the Hotel Parco dei Principi of Sorrento, reconstructing them into his trademark artisanal pieces in front of an audience.
Alongside works by Ettore Sottsas, Piero Fornasetti and Gio Ponti, Nilufar will present a range of exclusively commissioned pieces by the contemporary names on its roster, including Gaetano Pesce, Martino Gamper and Andrea Salvetti at this year's Design Miami.
