Yohji Yamamoto
Yohji Yamamoto’s boys paced the floor of his showroom to a drum roll. The oversized, laundered jackets and outerwear worn were based on the idea of uniform, a familiar theme but Yohji looked past the traditional (i.e. military) to the uniforms of school boys, sailors, Scotsmen, Mafiosi and the ‘fashion commando’.
Layering was another theme, one solid coloured jacket over a longer tartan one beneath, often pleated like kilts at the back. Vividly coloured hand-painted silks and sweaters borrowed a technique from Yuzen, the special printing process normally used for kimonos.
