Hussein Chalayan, Spring/Summer '09 (scroll down to read the review)
Hussein Chalayan
Planes, trains, automobiles - Hussein Chalayan is as fascinated in the aerodynamics of automotive design as he is in the way clothes create dynamics on the body.
His collection, entitled inertia, focussed on the mini-length cocktail dress in a variety of moulded and draped forms. A smashed glass print was mesmerizing, ditto one that looked like a pile of crushed car parts in a scrap yard, the odd number plate popping up on corseted tops.
The finale, accompanied by sounds from two chaps swirling fingers round a shelf of glasses which finally smashed, saw a series of dresses with moulded backs swooping out like speed lines caught on camera. Fashion sure does move fast.
