Yves Saint Laurent
As it was Yves Saint Laurent who gave women trousers all those years ago, it seems fitting that the first major sighting of trousers this season (it's been all about the dress so far) was on the runway of the YSL show.
Designer Stefano Pilati made 'masculine cut and tailoring applied to women's fashion' a key element of his show. The trouser - pleated, tapered and short enough to show off the new must-have YSL shoes (the only issue is which ones to choose) - along with the blazer - with or without sleeves - were full of references to classic Saint Laurent, yet spare enough to appeal to modernists, cut as they were in jersey.
Pilati also worked the iconic intertwining house logo (Cassandre, 1963) onto a grey cotton sweatshirt (another thing borrowed from the boys, but updated as a fully fashioned piece.) He also worked the logo into an all-over pattern (usually used for entry price point in accessories) - so subtle that it created just surface texture and random pattern - woven into cloth or embossed onto patent leather.
