For a house like Leonard, the signature orchid prints are everything, so it made sense to base the running order around the prints themselves. First came Papyrus in fuchsia and white, then Phoenix in turquoise, white and violet etc. The order also showed off the breadth of Veronique Leroy’s skill as a designer working with such a complex raw material, and in particular, her cutting of the squares and repeats, which used the geometric borders to great effect.
She adds a further dimension with matelassé or quilting over the print: as light as can be on a long dress, or used to emphasise the yoke, bust or shoulder of dresses.
Leonard is sure to benefit from the craze for florals that is sweeping through Paris (thanks mainly to the influence of Balenciaga), but in this case it can only be good news.
