Paul Smith
With a giant photographic image of the moon as a backdrop, the ‘Doctor Who’ theme tune as the soundtrack, and the first look out a silver puffer jacket cut from aluminium cloth, Paul Smith was dreaming about outer space. But there was more to it than ‘the moon is a beautiful symbol of life’ as informed to us by Smith backstage after the show. When he started this collection (almost a year back, for the record) he was thinking of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart and the random way they dressed. He calls it ‘posh rock’, which meant silver sheepskin, camel-hair coats, plenty of cashmere, coats made entirely in knit, mohair sweaters, animal print T-Shirts and of course a hint of the space-age, not just in silver fabrics and leathers, but hoods that zipped-up into a shawl collars and astronaut trousers with rows of zips around the knee.
