Fendi
A top with a spiralling mosaic pattern summed up the Fendi show. Karl Lagerfeld explored circles and rings through novel cutting as well as through decoration and embellishment. The mosaic pattern was all concentric circles, the tiles in this case were actually tiny pastilles of sheared mink, cut into circular disks the size of a pill and sewn by hand, one at a time, like beads on organza.
Fendi like to show off a little, especially when it comes to the skills of their artisans, some of who have worked with them for longer than Karl Lagerfeld’s 40 odd years. Concentric circles, appliquéd on sheer silks were made of millimetre wide slithers of suede, or torn silk ribbons and squares of shiny ciré were applied over ‘technical’ chiffon. All that craft was combined with techno fabrics like patent crepe, coated silks and nappa leather treated to look like satin. It was an excellent example of Made in Italy and frankly impossible for the high streets to rip off.
