Jil Sander, Spring Summer '08
Jil Sander
What better way to kick of the Spring Summer 2008 catwalk season than with another stellar show from Wallpaper* favourite Jil Sander. Raf Simons seems utterly comfortable in his role, even if still relatively new, as to confidently move things forward in a typically controlled way.
According to the designer the collection was all about light and lightness and that meant colour; dove grey, mint green and pastel blue- so pale it was almost white- as well as transparency, seen in a short sleeved translucent blazer over a white shirt or a double layered gauze knit in amber and grey. Simons has a very modern sensibility when it comes to colour, mixing the palest pastels and white together with stronger hues of amber, brick red, emerald green and ink blue.
Tailored looks prevailed. They were smart but easy with detail reduced to the essential only. Simons introduced a new pocket within a diagonal pleat, which gave the jacket a slight nipped-in waist. Similar treatments appeared in a raincoat in super lightweight nylon, with an engineered shoulder, double entry pockets and new hidden volumes at the side. The detailing may have its origins in 50s couture, but the result was definitely modern and very masculine.
With the exception of a new wider pleated pant, most of the trouser legs were long and slim and finished with graphic cut out leather sandals, the only accessory in this show.
