Tweed, herringbone, houndstooth, Prince of Wales and plenty of montone (sheepskin) formed the basis for the Dolce & Gabbana show, which was all about ‘warm, comfortable clothing and a feeling of protection and stability’. Dresses with gathered skirts fell way past the knee (with a kind of 1970s feel); appearing also in a surprisingly soft jumbo cord. The whole thing had a kind of country vibe with masculine roots, for example the ribbed knits and tailored details. Standouts included the three-piece pantsuit (also big in their men's collection) with a longer jacket, and either exposed stitching or raw cut edges, and exposed inter-facings on the shoulder. The same detailing was carried through into the dresses and skirts. Championing sheepskin instead of fur (which was used only as trompe l’oeil, printed onto wadded chiffon), the piece of choice was the sleeveless coat. For a Mary-had-a-little-lamb-but-wanted-to-go-to-the-ball moment, gowns came in tulle and, yes, sheepskin.
