At Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld developed his obsession with circular cutting, this time creating shapes that were more like petals on a flower, such the double-faced cashmere double layered navy cashmere cape coat. The circle also appeared as softly curved hems and in sculptural sleeves. Colour was classic with navy, black, ivory and grey. Being Fendi, there were of course some extraordinary things going on with fabric and fur. Felted cashmere was drilled or punched with giant holes making a kind of macro lace; glove leather was produced so fine, it could be pleated like silk on skirts and jackets; Persian lamb was cut on the bias; and sable had been ‘frosted’ on the tips. Yet the most spectacular of all was the mink that was coated with 24-carat gold. Thanks to a new molecular process that even we could not fathom (apparently it starts off being placed in a vacuum in order for the metal to attach itself to the pelts) the coating of the fur does not affect its prized softness.
