While Italy's furniture companies don't typically dabble in fashion, the reverse - fashion designers dipping their toes into design - occurs with ever increasing frequency. There's no better stage for this activity than the Salone del Mobile, a six-day champagne-drenched, design extravaganza. On the one hand, there are brands like Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Versace, Kenzo, Missoni and Hermès, who show off a huge range of wares to press and buyers from their fully dedicated home lines. But the fair has also enticed fashion brands with no formal Casa departments to get in on the furniture action with spruced up store windows, one-off furniture designer collaborations and special events. The cross-pollination also filters down to the designers themselves: industrial design whiz Tom Dixon donned his fashion trousers this season with the full-scale collection he designed for Adidas, while Turkish fashion designer Dice Kayek put down his scissors and picked up a scalpel to create a marble sculpture. Here's a round up of the best fashion-meets-design activity of the week.

‘Heaven, I’m in heaven…’ – Fred Astaire’s dulcet tones weren’t the only dreamy thing to resonate at Dries Van Noten’s show. Opening his show with ‘Cheek to Cheek’ (Astaire’s song for Ginger Rogers in the 1935 movie Top Hat), Van Noten pretty much prophesised what we would be feeling when we exited the beautiful cloistered halls of Paris’ City Hall – just heavenly. The idea of ‘fused genders’ was very much at the heart of the Belgian designer’s Fall serenade. Taking cues from both Fred and Ginger, the collection saw the likes of a men’s tailored shirt being tucked nonchalantly into a womanly wispy below-the-knee feathered skirt - a pair of grey trousers peeking just below the skirt’s hem. The structured, strong manliness of some of the looks, which in the first half were punctuated with preppy club-striped blazers and scarves, gradually glided into a softer gear: faded wallpaper motifs, chinoiserie, shimmering brocade and luxuriously textured ostrich feathers, which appeared as maribou trim on floaty tops and even punctuated with glittery stones on a particularly striking raspberry pink chiffon dress.

A strong scent of couture has wafted off fashion runways of late, most recently in New York where we saw a sea of shoulders curved into the round shapes made famous in the haute couture ateliers of the 1960s. Frida Giannini also caught couture fever this season at Gucci, but ran the distance with it, cinching her models' waists into wasp-like proportions, slicing open dress neck holes in demure, horizontal slits, and cutting ladylike pencil skirts with matching trapeze jackets. If it all sounds like the sort of outfits a Hitchcockian Tippi Hedren would have worn, think again. Giannini coated her womanly silhouettes in a glaze of hot naughtiness. The prim tailleurs were worn with fierce python stiletto boots, 'bad girl' black leather gloves and paper-thin leather bodysuits that clung to the skin like black matte cling film. The best looks were in the first three-quarters of the show when Giannini brought a subversive edge to classically feminine shapes, while the evening line-up ran off on a somewhat awkward course. No matter: a pencil-skirted, peplumed tailleur in glossy black python, a swing jacket and matching skirt in glossy astrakhan, and thread embroideries tracing the taut lines of trouser suits were all calibrated to perfection. The lady, it turns out, is a glorious tramp.

New York fashion week A/W 2013: Editor's picks

Edun

Edun, the ethical fashion label co-founded by US singer Bono and wife Ali Hewson, has come a long way since its inception in 2005. Under the stewardship of creative director Sharon Wauchob, the utopian label has surpassed its purpose of building trade relationships with Africa by turning out increasingly cohesive collections for him and her, year after year. For Fall, Wauchob gave a nod to the label’s rock and roll roots with silk tartan, liquid lamé and studded leather aplenty. Still, this was no time warp; pieces for both sexes, like black blouses with delicate chain detailing and skinny knitted sweaters, boasted seductive, languid silhouettes and lots of skin, thanks to necklines plunging down almost to the navel.
