Already a playground for international architects, Dubai is now luring designers too. Last month it hosted Design Days Dubai, the Middle East’s first fair dedicated to collectible design, where galleries flaunted their wares before the region's collectors. Director Cyril Zammit conceived and executed the fair in just eight months, launching days ahead of Art Dubai, when many collectors were already out scouting for new works. More than 20 galleries – including fair regulars like Carpenters Workshop Gallery, and more local names, such as Carwan Gallery – convened before the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. The pervading feelings were eagerness for creative 'newness' and excitement about the future of the design industry.
