When I was approached by Napkin, I made the decision to address the brief from a unique perspective- I wanted to do something interesting and original. When I pick up a paper napkin in a restaurant or cafe I always end up playing with it, folding, scoring, rolling and creasing or scrunching it, so I decided to look at the napkin as a material for construction and explore it's structural potential. I decided I wanted to emphasise the folds and creases, which, even tough sharp and linear, also have a soft edged quality. The final form was realised as a clock, but the structure could also have been applied to an architectural, fashion and textiles, furniture or jewellery context.
It's the first event I've done for charity and it's a great opportunity to be able t work in that way. From a design industry context it's particularly interesting because it illustrates something which is happening more often now, where the boundaries between art and design are being merged and dissolved; artists are producing design works and designers producing art works.
