Yinka Shonibare, 'Nelson's Ship in a Bottle'. Photographer: James O Jenkins. (Scroll down to read more)
Having grown up in London and Nigeria, Yinka Shonibare’s art explores issues of race and class through painting, sculpture and photography. Shonibare’s signature work uses brightly coloured material that encompasses influences from a host of cultures, including Indonesian, Dutch and West African.

Returning to the historic inhabitants of Trafalgar Square, Shonibare proposes making a scale replica of Lord Nelson’s ship, HMS Victory, in a giant glass bottle and using the richly coloured textiles for the sails – reflecting the story of multiculturalism in London today which he feels began with Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
