Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was an English abstract painter. His work was most notably influenced by the synthetic cubist movement, the primitive stylings of French post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau, the neoplastic style of Mondrian, who he met in Paris, and the work of Picasso. His whimsical, freestyle sketches on the wall of our Enlightenment Room are evidence of this eclectic blend of abstract influences which evolved over his long career into a graphic style distinctly his own.
