Façade study for Xixi Wetland artist village I#, Hangzhou
HISTORY
Wang Lu, is professor at Tsinghua University and chief editor of World Architecture Magazine. He set up his own practice, in+of architecture, in Beijing in 2003. A key early project was the Tiantai Museum in Zhejiang, which received wide acclaim for its blend of modern forms with traditional materials and techniques.
APPROACH
Wang's work is grounded in an acknowledgement of the importance of local conditions. 'We use traditional crafts, techniques and materials,' he says, 'and endeavour to create places endowed with the spirit of our time and the authenticity of our culture.'
FUTURE
Forthcoming projects include the Chinart gallery in Sichuan and the Xixi Wetland Artist Village Number One, both blessed with challenging sites that perfectly suit his approach. 'Architecture should be confidently and harmoniously embedded in the locale of its growth,' says the architect. Other ongoing works include the Hongmao Fuchun House, the Zhang Peili Art Museum and a shopping plaza in Tianjin.
