Chinese Architects Directory: DNA

Artist village in Songzhuang, Beijing
History
Founded in 2004 by Xu Tiantian, DNA has risen swiftly to a position of prominence in contemporary Chinese architecture. Their connections are impeccable: prior to establishing DNA, Xu studied at Harvard Design School, then worked at a number of design firms in the USA and Netherlands, including OMA. DNA Design and Architecture was eventually founded in 2004, following Xu's contribution to the JinHua Architecture Park (co-curated by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei). The studio's first all-new structure was the Songzhuang Art Center, built in Songzhuang Artist Village in 2006.
APPROACH
'We believe a building's character is shaped by both program/gene and context/environment, a bit like human personality,' says Xu. DNA's Ordos Art Museum in Inner Mongolia and the Changbaishan Public Activity Centre all reflect this bold approach.
FUTURE
DNA is currently working on a host of new projects around the country, including the Songzhuang Artist residences in Beijing, the Xixi leisure centre in the Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou, a new museum in Qingchengshan and some affordable housing in Songzhuang. 'It's hard to predict the future of Chinese architecture but we hope it stays adventurous.'
