Chocolates may be the proverbial food of the gods, but it's taken Hong Kong – the spiritual temple to haute consumerism – to artfully link 70% cacao to the more secular world of fashion.
One of several home-grown chocolatiers making a bitter-sweet dent in the local appetite for Valrhona and Godiva, Vero's delicate hand-made nuggets are party favourites among Hong Kong's smart sets, regularly appearing at events held by the likes of Bvlgari, Dolce & Gabbana and La Perla.
Especially appealing is the range of flavours that show off the chocolatier's versatility, with ingredients like soft lavender, spicy nutmeg and Muscovado, warm ginger, and green tea.
Its recent collaboration with Shanghai Tang – the Hong Kong-based boutique that made it sexy again to wear a mandarin-collar – is a pair of smartly designed limited edition boxes: one filled with chocolate squares in which is embedded a glossy gold star, and the other with bonbons oozing with honey truffle, sea salt caramel and rum raisin. Each piece is almost too good to eat, but when it comes to dark chocolates, we're the last ones to argue for restraint.
Vero's dark alliance with the fashion world has been so successful that it's already working with Cartier and Juicy Couture to create new limited edition chocolates, reason enough to loosen the belt a notch or two.
