It’s still early days in 2008, but legendary Danish brewery, Jacobsen Brewhouse, has already set a new record for producing the most expensive beer in the world. The crown jewel has been named Vintage Nr. 1, and comes corked and wax-sealed in a slender, misty green bottle, just like a bottle of vintage champagne.
With a price tag of 2008 DKK per bottle, naysayers would brush off this beer as being a little excessive. But as the only contemporary beer produced in JC Jacobsen’s original 1847 cellar today, the unique brew possesses a complex mix of flavours. Vintage Nr. 1 is a full-bodied barley wine, at 10.5 per cent alcohol by volume, with hints of prunes and port. Having aged in Swedish and French oak casks for six months, the beer also has a distinct smoky caramel and vanilla aroma.
Like most good things in this world, Jacobsen’s Vintage Nr. 1 is limited in edition and only 600 bottles of the brew have been produced. The brewery commissioned Danish artist, Frans Kannik, to create a series of four lithograph labels for the bottles. Each handmade print depicts Sif, the wife of Thor, who was frequently used by JC Jacobsen as a symbol of strength.
