Food & Drink

In an age where it's increasingly difficult to walk one block without passing a generic clone town coffee establishment, it's comforting to know that there's still room for well thought-out, independent places to grab a macchiato and muffin. Nordic Bakery is one such haven, recently opened in London's Golden Square.

The brainchild of Jali Wahlsten, Nordic Bakery has a pared down sensibility in keeping with the interiors of its namesake that we know and love. The objective behind opening the café was to extend our appreciation of Scandinavian design to Scandinavian food, which he insists shares the same principles: uncompromising simplicity, craft, and use of natural materials and ingredients.

Unlike the scruffy, slapdash frontispieces of its English neighbours, Nordic Bakery's exterior is clinically precise and immaculately conceived. From the duck-egg blue of the wooden frame to the sans-serif font and orderly food display, it's apparent that the project has been realised very much as a whole. The slate, pine and wicker interior plays host to classic Scandinavian café fare, such as dark rye bread sandwiches, cinnamon buns and the finest quality coffee.

The long-term plan is to roll-out more branches internationally, with New York and Berlin next on the agenda. But for now, we're just pleased to have such a good-looking alternative to the stale croissants and bitter coffee available on every other street corner.
