We’re very partial to a cupcake or two when the mood takes us, which is most days. So it’s with great excitement that we greet the opening of the Hummingbird bakery’s second branch in London’s South Kensington.
American home baking is the Hummingbird’s fare, and it knocks socks off any Bettie Crocker cake mix you might have lounging at the back of your store cupboard. Everything is freshly made, iced and decorated on the premises each day: cupcakes, big cakes, cheesecakes and pies, which explains the addictive smell that drifts down the street.
There’s a very definite retro feel. Aside from the fact that home baking is retro by default, this second branch has gone one step further than the original Portobello Hummingbird by adding red velvet seats, a nice match for your slice of red velvet cake.
