French designer Gwenaël Nicolas takes an independent approach to his craft. Producing everything from perfume bottles for Issey Miyake and store concepts for Uniqlo – with several spas and hotels littered along the way – Nicolas took to the Maurice Lacroix brief with standard aplomb.
Now based in Tokyo, Nicolas established his own design company, Curiosity JP, back in 1998. Instead of stamping his own, distinctive mark on the Pontos Décentrique GMT, Nicolas went to the root of Maurice Lacroix’s original concept for inspiration.
The bi-circular pattern of the original watch represents only two of the world’s five continents. For his design, Nicolas has aimed to include all five continents - uniting the world’s time zones on one watch face - claiming 'In a sense, time has the ability to bind the world, my 'Five Continents' Pontos Decentrique GMT expresses this unity'.
Nicolas plans to donate all proceeds from this year’s auction, to human aid organisation, Médicins Sans Frontières.
