Colophon 2009, Luxembourg
Events
Now, here at Wallpaper* we know a bit about putting a magazine together, and when it comes to producing the pages; creativity by the bucket load, unerring determination and absolute dedication are basic essentials on the rocky road to publishing success.
For independent magazine makers on the creative cusp however, the concept of expanding, changing, or even starting-up can seem rather daunting.
With this in mind,Mike Koedinger Editions (Luxembourg’s leading independent publishers) and Casino Luxembourg Contemporary Art Forum (Luxembourg’s all encompassing artistic resource) have joined forces to produce Colophon, a biennial symposium for independent magazine maestros.

Along with advertisers, readers and general creative-types keen to make their mark on the industry, the second Colophon event (held 13th-15th March) was an unmissible chance for professionals and aspirationals alike, to be exposed to and informed by the world of the independent magazine.
Colophon’s weeklong celebration and exchange programme consisted of fifteen exhibitions, offering guests the opportunity to experience some of the newest, most exciting work from across the globe - along with over forty hours of conferences, creative meetings, workshops and presentations.
‘Ten Guest Magazines’, an exhibition taking residence in various cultural spots around Luxembourg was particularly worthy of note. In each locale one of ten international, independent magazines exhibited their wares, with our highlights including Kasino A4 – a magazine ‘for the melancholic’, and Good – a magazine ‘for people that give a damn’.
Of course, being the media shin-dig that it was, where would Colophon have been without a few generously stocked (open) bars to lubricate proceedings? On each night over the course of the weekend, ‘networking cocktails’ were hosted around the city to coincide with Colophon’s various openings and events. ‘Hip local bar’ Carre Rotondes’s Friday night soiree was top of our hit-list for mandatory ‘boissons gratuits’, and judging by the crowd we encountered, we weren’t alone.
